Are there dishwashers out there which will clean a extremely dirty pot spotless?

I've been wondering this for a while now, but if a pot is really dirty, would some really good dishwashing detergent combined with my dishwasher's "pots and pans mode" be enough to get my pot spotless? Currently I'm using Cascade gel packs. Or do I actually have to wash it by hand first?
